Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction

Women with very large, pendulous breasts may experience a variety of medical problems, caused by the excessive weight, from back and neck pain or skin irritation to skeletal deformities and breathing problems. Bra straps may leave indentations in women's shoulders. Additionally, unusually large breasts can make a woman, or teenage girl, feel extremely self-conscious. Breast reduction, technically known as reduction mammaplasty, is designed for such women.

If you're considering breast reduction, Dr. English can provide you specific information on how he would proceed in your particular situation.

Procedure
The procedure removes fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the breasts, making them smaller, lighter, and firmer. It can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. The goal is to achieve the look of smaller, better-shaped breasts in proportion to the rest of the body.

At the English Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery Center Surgi Spa, breast surgery is carried out under general anesthesia and is performed as an outpatient procedure at our accredited surgical facility. Prior to surgery, the breasts are carefully marked to indicate where incisions are to be made. The placement of these incisions depends upon the type of breast surgery that is being performed as well as the technique that will achieve the best result. Every effort is made to reduce the size of the scars and to make them as inconspicuous as possible.

Recovery
Discomfort following surgery is generally minimal to moderate and is usually controlled with oral medications. Stitches are removed five to seven days after the surgery and involve little discomfort. Clients undergoing breast surgery may have to wear a special bra for several weeks and limit activities that interfere with the healing process. Strenuous exercise and must be avoided for several weeks.

Swelling and discoloration may occur but usually subside in a few weeks. Areas of numbness, firmness and tenderness around the incisions and under the skin are common. Normal feeling returns several weeks to months after surgery; however, the sensations of the breasts may never be quite the same. Scars from the incisions, although permanent, fade significantly with time. Eighteen to 36 months or longer may be required for this fading process to be completed, especially with breast reduction and mastopexy procedures.
