What is Skin Resurfacing?

Sun damage and aging cause our skin to change. As we get older, we start to develop fine lines and wrinkles, and too much exposure to the sun can lead to dark spots or blemishes on the face.

At Dr. English’s practice in Little Rock, AR, we offer a number of skin procedures to get your skin looking its best. Whether you want to reduce the appearance of fine lines, get rid of sunspots or blemishes, smooth out texture, reduce scarring or simply rejuvenate tired-looking skin, board-certified facial plastic and cosmetic surgeon Dr. Jim English can help you achieve the results you desire.

Skin resurfacing procedures, as listed below, are designed to improve the skin’s overall appearance. The desire to improve one’s skin has evolved over the centuries. The Egyptians used to bathe in sour milk to improve their skin not knowing that it was the lactic acid we use today that removed the outer layers of sun damage and gave their skin a more youthful appearance. The French during the Renaissance would apply red wine to their face utilizing the tartaric acid in the beverage to achieve the same result in addition to the benefits of the grape’s antioxidant properties. Moreover, the Turkish people would lightly singe their skin with fire to cause their skin’s exfoliation.

Skin has a unique ability to “refurbish” itself on a constant basis, as do other body organs. In fact, our body has the wherewithal to replace itself almost completely every seven years. The problem arises as we age and the process slows down or is completely eliminated. The skin resurfacing procedures offered by Dr. English at his Little Rock surgery center are specifically designed to help jump start the reparative process depending on the depth of wound created. In other words, the deeper the wound created by the offending agent, within reason, the better the results but the longer the recovery time and the more chances of issues with skin lightening and textural changes may occur.

Most of us think that surgical procedures, such as a face lift, can rid us of lines and wrinkles because we can stand in front of a mirror, stretch our skin backward and notice the loss of elasticity. However in the “real world”, issues that have to do with the skin itself (epidermis and dermis) are best dealt with via three distinct types of skin resurfacing modalities. Even with the advent of dermal fillers and Botox, permanent improvement of aged skin is best thought of in the following context, those performed with the aid of chemicals, i.e. chemical peels, those done mechanically as with dermabrasion techniques and those done thermally with a laser device or its equivalent. Regardless of the chosen venue, there are different modifications of each that Dr. English has in his repertoire. Depending on the patient’s needs and desires, a selective injury is produced on the skin’s surface and an organic debris field is created signaling the body’s defense mechanisms to begin its reparation. The end result over time is a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing look for your skin. If you would like more information, click on the individual procedures below.
